The Qualifiers

The MISSA (the midwest interscholastic sailing association) holds two qualifiers in the fall for national events. The first is the Mallory fleet race qualifier and the second in the Baker team race qualifier.

On April 26 and 27, Loyola sailors competed at Chicago Yacht Club for one of two Mallory Qualifying spots. The breeze was on day one as Cliff and Davis Porter in A and Alex Post and Tommy Holmberg in B put up strong finishes. The day was called early due to excessive wind with Loyola in a three way tie for second. Day three started slow with Loyola dropping a few spots. Clifford and Juliann Sargis in A and Alex and Ciara McHugh finished strong, however as Alex closed out the regatta with two wins bringing the team to a second place finish.

The next weekend, May 3 and May 4 Loyola sailors competed for the one qualifying spot at team racing nationals. Luckily, Loyola brought a big team of varying sizes to accommodate for the ever varying conditions. Loyola was buoyed by the huge plays of Clifford Porter and finished in third place.
