The Great Lakes Championship

This regatta has 3 divisions, A and B are sailed in 420s while C is sailed in a laser.
Loyola 1: A- Tommy Holmberg & Juliann Sargis, B- Alex Post and Ciara McHugh, C- Davis Porter
Loyola 2: A- John Kinzel & Taylor Crimaldi, B- Chris Lynch & Grace Williams, C- Kevin Kennedy

There were an unheard of 31 boats registered to this regatta. The competition took place in the Chicago Yacht Club (Monroe) harbor and consequently, conditions were extremely trying. 180 degree wind shifts had sailors sailing upwind and downwind at various points on the same leg. At one point, 15 boats were simultaneously capsized due to an enormous rogue puff of wind. Through all of this, Loyola sailors performed magnificently. Holmberg could not catch New Trier's Steph Hudson in the A division, and settled for second while Alex Post dominated the B division and Davis Porter sailed well in the C. John Kinzel was set to take third place in the A division, until his final race bullet was revealed to be a disqualifying OCS. Chris Lynch sailed fantastically in the largest event of his career and Kevin Kennedy was the top Loyola finisher in the C division with a sixth place finish.

Loyola ended up with a second place finish behind New Trier. They sailed very well at this regatta and now set their sights on a great spring season with top finishes at nationals.

Keelboat Regatta

The Loyola Academy sailing team does not sail keelboats; and those who do (John and Davis) had not in several months. Still, they jumped at the chance to attend such a great regatta. The six man team that would sail the J-22 was hand picked by teammate and Melges 24 sailor Davis Porter. He insisted this be an elite team, and grueling tryouts of pain and endurence were held. These six survived.

Kevin Kennedy
Alex Post
Tommy Holmberg
John Kinzel
Ciara Mchugh

Coached by Stu Hall, the team headed up to Grosse Ile Michigan on Halloween, skipping the holiday festivities in the quest to win the first ever Missa Keelboat championship. Davis Porter was the skipper as Loyola won the first two races, and maintained a comfortable lead throughout the regatta. They battled biting cold, harsh wind, and Peter Polgar for two days and came out on top. Alex Post and John Kinzel drove the final two races.

Halloween Regatta

Loyola Academy always strives for victory in all parts of the triathlon that is the Halloween spectacular. In order of importance: the costume contest, the pumpkin carving contest, and then the sailing. Dino was again unleashed this year by Loyola's Davis Porter, but he was again robbed of the costume contest gold and the pumpkin contest was cancelled, so sadly all we won was the sailing. :(

Loyola set out to dominate the regatta as they did last year by sending very competitive teams.
Loyola 1: A- Tommy Holmberg & Juliann Sargis, B- Alex Post and Alejandra Edery
Loyola 2: A- Davis Porter & Taylor Crimaldi, B- John Kinzel & Ciara McHugh
Loyola 3: A- Kevin Kennedy & Grace Williams, B- Chris Lynch & Colleen Koller
Loyola 4: A Maggie Koller & Shea S., B- Marcus Jackson & Emily Norris

Loyola got off to a great start with Holmberg and Post taking first place in their first two races. Neither finished out of the top five in a race and Alex went on to win all but one of his races. Winds escalated from 10 to 20 knots for a very hectic final race in both divisions, both dominated by Loyola 1. Kevin Kennedy had a great regatta with consistant finishes culminating in a solid 4th place finish in the A division. John Kinzel overcame some tough early races with a commanding final set of a first and second place. He finished third in the B division. Holmberg won the A division and Post took second in B bringing Loyola 1 to a 1st place overall with a crushing 30 point lead over fierce competitor New Trier.

Coast Guard

Loyola, for the first time in years, sent teams to two separate events. They were hundreds of miles away with some in Minnetonka, MN for the Fall Colors Regatta, and others in New London, CT for the Coast Guard Regatta.

In Minnesota, the JV team had tons of fun and learned a lot while racing. Loyola gold performed well with Chris Lynch starting slow in the A division, but building momentum to be one of the best sailors in the second half of the event. A highlight Maggie Koller's fantastic performance in the B fleet and hot streak of great finishes up to second place and Colin Patterson's third place finish.

Loyola Academy arrived at the Coast Guard Academy to meet heavy breeze, some of the best competition in the country, and their coach's goal of a top 3 finish at the event. This would be an improvement on their 6th place finish at the event. Breeze at 15-20 left Ciara McHugh and Juliann Sargis on the sidelines, while the big crews, Kevin Kennedy and John Kinzel suited up.

Post and Kennedy in the A division (sailed in 420s) went up against some fierce boats, leading their day 1 finishes to be out of the top five. Their skill showed, however in that although their average finish was 8th place, they were much more consistent than other sailors leading them to be in fifth place in tight competition for fourth. Ciara McHugh also sailed a set with Alex and did great.

Holmberg and Kinzel finished with mostly second places in the B division (sailed in FJs) with Sargis stepping in for a set leading to Loyola's first 1st place finish of the event. By the end of the day, the B sailors lagged 15 points out of first place,  but had established a 30 point lead over the third place boat.

Loyola finished the day in second place overall to Chirstchurch School, and with a lead over Monseigneur Donavon. The next day brought breeze 20-25 and it was determined that both divisions would sail 420s, as FJs are liable to flip over. Loyola watched solemnly as they dropped out of second with Post and Kennedy flipped and in last place in the first race {they were later given redress as the incident had been the fault of a foul}, and Monseigneur Donavon overtaking them by ten points. Post took a sixth in the next race and kept the team competitive. Holmberg and Kinzel knew they had to stick Donavon in their final races as they took a sixth, and won the final race with Donavon trailing both races. Post and Kennedy then went out and crushed the competition, also finishing in first but this race was not counted, as breeze picked up to 30 knots, and the set was abandoned.

Loyola took 3rd overall, losing to Donavon by 2 points, but accomplishing what they came to do.

Junior Olympics
October 11, 2008
Macatawa Bay Yacht Club

Loyola sent several boats to this regatta in hopes of taking first in all four events: Laser radial, Laser full rig, Collegiate 420, and Club 420. (A last second switch had Kevin Kennedy and Ciara McHugh switching from club 420 to collegiate.)

Conditions were light on day one, with hours of postponement outside the bay, followed by three shifty races within. Day two had sailors competing out on the big lake, with varying amounts of breeze, big shifts, and puffs.

Radial: Alex Post, in a competitive fleet of 19 boats, skillful took second place in most races. Sadly, Drew Shea of New Trier took most firsts. Still, Alex sailed fantastically, overcoming confusing conditions to win a few races and take silver overall.

Full: John Kinzel, a little man in a big boy boat, again showed his toughness as he competed in the full rig division. His consistently high finishes led him to a second place finish.

Collegiate 420: Tommy Holmberg and Colleen Evans sailed together as did Kevin Kennedy and Ciara McHugh. Holmberg and Kennedy had Holmberg taking second and Kennedy taking fourth behind their Team Death Speed ally: Tim Zacher. Out of 20 boats. They were off to a good start. Holmberg went on to win the next two races and closed the day out with a four point lead. The next day had Kennedy and Holmberg finishing out of the top two, but with respectable top five finishes. In the end, Holmberg took bronze, and Kennedy took fourth.

Final Tally
Radial- Post: 2nd
Full: Kinzel: 2nd
Collegiate: Holmberg and Evans: 3rd
Kennedy and McHugh: 4th
