Junior Olympics

Junior Olympics

Macatawa Bay Yacht Club

Loyola sent several boats to this regatta in hopes of taking first in all four events: Laser radial, Laser full rig, Collegiate 420, and Club 420. (A last second switch had Kevin Kennedy and Ciara McHugh switching from club 420 to collegiate.)

Conditions were light on day one, with hours of postponement outside the bay, followed by three shifty races within. Day two had sailors competing out on the big lake, with varying amounts of breeze, big shifts, and puffs.

Radial: Alex Post, in a competitive fleet of 19 boats, skillful took second place in most races. Sadly, Drew Shea of New Trier took most firsts. Still, Alex sailed fantastically, overcoming confusing conditions to win a few races and take silver overall.

Full: John Kinzel, a little man in a big boy boat, again showed his toughness as he competed in the full rig division. His consistently high finishes led him to a second place finish.

Collegiate 420: Tommy Holmberg and Colleen Evans sailed together as did Kevin Kennedy and Ciara McHugh. Holmberg and Kennedy had Holmberg taking second and Kennedy taking fourth behind their Team Death Speed ally: Tim Zacher. Out of 20 boats. They were off to a good start. Holmberg went on to win the next two races and closed the day out with a four point lead. The next day had Kennedy and Holmberg finishing out of the top two, but with respectable top five finishes. In the end, Holmberg took bronze, and Kennedy took fourth.

Final Tally
Radial- Post: 2nd
Full: Kinzel: 2nd
Collegiate: Holmberg and Evans: 3rd
Kennedy and McHugh: 4th
