Breeze was light and shifty to begin on Saturday, and, while the senior and junior teams started the day poorly, the sophomores shot to the front with consistently high finishes. Later in the day, breeze picked up, as did the rest of Loyola's performance, with everyone finishing in the top five and everyone winning one or more races and in Davis Porter's case, 4.  Loyola ended day 1 with the sophomores in second place, and the seniors in third. In the A division, Alex Post was in second to New Trier by two points and Tommy Holmberg was in third by 16 points and John Kinzel was close behind. Davis was in second place in the B division.

The beginning of day 2 had Davis  winning a redress that moved the sophomores to first place. Davis had a great day of consistent finishes, leading him to win the B division.  In the A division, Post lagged while Kinzel won a race, and Holmberg won two in a row, moving him to the lead in the division with Post and Kinzel tied five points back. At this point, Loyola was in first, second, and third in the divison with. The A division all came down to a heated last set. Holmberg and Kinzel took subpar a 12th and thirteenth in the second to last race, moving Post into the lead. It all came down to the final race won by New Trier. Steph Hudson of New Trier took first, followed by Post, Holmberg, and Kinzel.

The sophomores took first place in the team score, followed by the seniors, who took third.

Culver

Loyola Academy's Christopher Lynch took third place in the B division after two races. Loyola sailor Alex Post won the first three races of the Radial division and went on to take first place in the class. He was followed by Tommy Holmberg, who placed second.

Racing did not occur during day two do to lack of breeze, so more importantly than sailing were the team's no breeze-shenanigans. Loyola Academy, Evanston, and bits of Grosse Ile fit 23 people on a laser and, after, a 420. This feat has been placed into the Guinness book of world records and we openly challenge anyone to attempt it.

Kickoff Classic

Sheridan Shore's Kickoff Classic Regatta was cancelled due to the realization that there had already been a regatta it was not kicking anything off. Also, incredible flooded caused the water treatment facility in the Wilmette Harbor to open it's locks, sending powerful curent through the harbor, sweeping several moored boats out to sea. The conditions made it impossible to sail. Said Loyola sailor Davis"Johnny Tsunami" Porter, "I like totally wish I was surfing right now."

Grosse Ile Regatta

Loyola started off on the road to the perfect season in Grosse Ile, Michigan sending 13 sailors and 3 teams: Gold, Silver and Bronze. Tough competition filled the A fleet but Alex Post and Juliann Sargis started off with consistant finishes followed by a four race streak of wins. Their final set included two ninth place finishes putting them in second place in A. Tommy Holmberg and Ciara Mchugh took first place in the B division followed closely by Davis Porter and Chris Lynch of Loyola silver. Loyola Gold (Post, Sargis, Holmberg, McHugh, Kennedy) took first place with a thirty point lead over second place Loyola Silver (Kinzel, Evans, Porter, Lynch).

The A division was won by Tim Zacher, a Culver Academy sailor and  member of the renowned Team Death Speed along with Kevin Kennedy, Alex Post, Tommy Holmberg and Brady Savage.

The Chuck Nevel JV Regatta

On May 24, Loyola varsity sailors hosted the Chuck Nevel JV Regatta. The regatta is named after the great former coach of Loyola sailing who always showed special dedication in making the JV team a fun and educational experience.

Fantastic conditions including a perfect 10 knot breeze, warm temperatures and sun made this regatta a huge success. Tom Cook an Chris Lynch fought it out all day for the win with Chris Lynch taking it in the end by only one point.  All of our JV sailors did fantastic and they should be very proud of their performances. The results of the regatta were as follows:

The Qualifiers

The MISSA (the midwest interscholastic sailing association) holds two qualifiers in the fall for national events. The first is the Mallory fleet race qualifier and the second in the Baker team race qualifier.

On April 26 and 27, Loyola sailors competed at Chicago Yacht Club for one of two Mallory Qualifying spots. The breeze was on day one as Cliff and Davis Porter in A and Alex Post and Tommy Holmberg in B put up strong finishes. The day was called early due to excessive wind with Loyola in a three way tie for second. Day three started slow with Loyola dropping a few spots. Clifford and Juliann Sargis in A and Alex and Ciara McHugh finished strong, however as Alex closed out the regatta with two wins bringing the team to a second place finish.

The next weekend, May 3 and May 4 Loyola sailors competed for the one qualifying spot at team racing nationals. Luckily, Loyola brought a big team of varying sizes to accommodate for the ever varying conditions. Loyola was buoyed by the huge plays of Clifford Porter and finished in third place.
